Writing and Managing Code Snippets in Cylix

Are you tired of having to rewrite the same code snippet over and over again in your programs? If you’ve been coding long enough, you’ve probably devised a way of writing down your classes and functions in text files or some other generic note taking applications and then copy-pasting them whenever required.

However, that can be a hassle too. Instead, it can be easier to have all your snippets, labeled and ready-to-use, in one place. Cylix lets you do this easily for many programming languages. It allows you to create code snippets in tens of languages, including JAVA, PHP, C++, PERL, C, Coffee and Python.

Our powerful software will let you store and manage the most valuable pieces of code so that you can reuse them when needed, saving lots of time in the process. This feature is also useful when you’ve found a large, useful block of code in a program that you’ve written in the past. You don’t have to write it again or lose it in an orphan text file or project. You can save it as a project in Cylix for later use.

Creating a Code Snippet on Cylix

To create a code snippet in a new project on Cylix, right click on New Folder, go to New Item, select Code Editor and choose the language of your choice. Then select a Theme and a Mode for the snippet.
The Theme changes the display colors. You can pick one that is soothing to the eyes and makes the code stand out for you or pick the geekiest or most classic one you love.

You can start writing code directly in the application itself. Our code editor offers syntax highlighting and code completion for all the supported languages. You can also cut and paste the code that you’ve written on a text file elsewhere, and save it with highlighted syntax on your Cylix project. Give the file a name, and you can easily search for it later, using the search function near the top of the application window. A future release will add the ability to add tags to your snippets of code. Using tags will make managing your database easier.

Importing Snippets

You have the option to quickly import a code snippet into a Cylix project folder from elsewhere on your computer. To do this, right-click on the destination folder. Choose Import from Local Folder and locate the file.

If you find the application has highlighted what it perceives as syntax errors, it may be that the Mode is set to another language. Select the right one and the application will know which language to support.

Managing Code Snippets

Cylix uses a tree-view folder structure so that you can see all the bits you’ve saved right in front of you. You can collapse and expand folders to make any large project more manageable. You can move snippets around from one folder to another simply by drag and drop.
Is there any capability you would like to see in Cylix for managing code snippets? Let us know!
